John Daly shot a 65 in the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which happened to be his best opening round score in nearly a decade. He's one-over on the day during the second round and trails leaders Brandt Snedeker and Matt Jones by five strokes.
In his fourth tournament of 2015, Daly looks to be on his way to make his second cut of the season. He finished 29th in the Sanderson Farms Championship back in November, but failed to make the cut in the Sony Open in Hawaii and Humana Challenge in January. The 48-year-old is looking to rebound after a poor 2014 season, during which he played in 15 tournaments and earned money in just five.
He actually missed the cut in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last year.
Coming into today, Daly was one stroke behind leaders J.B. Holmes and Justin Hicks, but he has fell a bit behind thanks to fast starts for Snedeker (-11) and Matt Jones (-11), who are now in the lead. The two-time major winner is still at seven-under through 11 holes on Friday and is seemingly keeping his mistakes to a minimum as he works to earn his first PGA Tour victory since 2004, when he defeated Luke Donald and Chris Riley during a playoff in the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.
If Daly can hold on for the next round and a half, he'll make the cut at this particular event for the first time in his last 11 tries.
Last year's champion, Jimmy Walker, is currently tied for 40th at four-under par.
Tiger Woods, who won the event back in 2000, announced earlier this week that he will not be playing in tournaments until his "play and scores" are acceptable for the PGA Tour. The 39-year-old missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open two weeks ago after shooting an 82 in the second round and was then forced to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open after 11 holes last week because of a back injury.
The purse for the event is $6.8 million.
UPDATE: Brandt Snedeker and Matt are tied for the lead at 12-under; John Daly finished with a 72 and is tied for 37th.
