He didn't get the nickname "Jaws" for no reason. Joey Chestnut took the winning title at the 2013 Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest again making this his seventh win in a row. According to the Huffington Post, Chestnut downed 69 wieners and buns in only 10 minutes. His only competition was Matt Stonie, who placed in second after eating 51 hot dogs and buns.
The 210-pound man broke his previous record of 68 hot dogs which he set in 2009 and tied last year. Chestnut had a ton of support from fans who carried the reigning champ up to stage in a mustard-yellow chair. His biggest supporter though was probably his girlfriend, Neslie, who helped cheer Chestnut on by standing in front of him and yelling at him to eat more, USA Today reports.
The aggressive coaching helped. In the women's event Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas held her winning title by eating 36 and three quarters franks barely beating out Juliet Lee, who ate 36.
The annual event, organized by Major League Eating, attracts hundreds of people to the iconic frankfurter stand near the Coney Island boardwalk and is seen as a highly coveted competition. In the world of competitive eating, this would be equivalent to the Super Bowl, the Huffington Post reports.
"Traveling around the world to eat, it's a weird life, but I love it," Chestnut told the New York Daily News. "There's no better feeling than knowing I'm going to break the guy next to me. His body will shut down and I will keep eating. Then I will look out and see a crowd of happy people."
He also said that he doesn't plan on stopping at seven winning titles adding that "Ten is looking more and more likely."
