As more and more people turn to their smartphones for the majority of their media consumption, it's very important that phones be able to stream the highest quality video without any problems. At this time, 4K video is expensive to stream. Thankfully, one company is looking to change that.
PCWorld reported that hardware developer Qualcomm is currently trying to make it easier to stream 4K video on Android phones with their latest processors. The Snapdragon 620 and 618 processors are reported to have 4K video capabilities and are designed for the lower-end smartphone market, specifically anything priced at $300 or more. The new chips will be released for public use sometime later this year.
The 4K processors aren't the first to come from Qualcomm, which is also selling its Snapdragon 810 chips but only for phones that cost at least $500.
While these chips may have 4K power, smartphone screens aren't there yet. However, these processors will make it easier for users to stream their favorite videos or games in 4K quality on larger screens, such as projectors or televisions.
On top of this, Qualcomm announced the eight-core Snapdragon 425 and 415 chips, which would be usable in low-cost smartphones and would have a faster LTE connectivity than past phones.
All of these devices will be released right after Qualcomm settles a 975 million fine from the Chinese government for becoming the dominant processor creator on their market and for overcharging customers.
