Reddit is a place of much good and of much ill. Whether it's offering opportunities to be a secret Santa, acting as a forum for the Gamergate community or any other number of acts, the site is a hub for a lot of things. But now Reddit is taking the next step toward supporting a good cause.
Last year, Reddit announced in a blog post that they planned on donating 10 percent of their advertising revenue from 2014 to charity. According to ReadWriteWeb, the total amount of revenue for 2014 amounted to $8,276,594.93, which means that Reddit will donate $827,659.49 to charity.
But which charity? Reddit has reportedly teamed up with charity fact-checking company Charity Navigator to help Redditors to determine what charity the funds will go to. Users will be able to search US charities and vote for them here.
Users can vote for as many charities as they like, but they can only vote once for each charity. The voting box will be open until February 25th, 10 a.m. PST. Reddit plans to announce the winners later that day.
While this is the first time Reddit has given away ad revenue to charity, it isn't the first time that donations from the Reddit community have drawn controversy. Last September, a few hackers leaked photos of various celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence. The subreddit /r/thefappening was a key place for finding these pics. According to Mediaite, this subreddit decided to donate money to a cancer research institute in honor of Lawrence and co. However, the organizations that they decided to donate to rejected the donations.
