A man set himself on fire Tuesday morning in the bathroom of a Starbucks in Los Angeles, resulting in him suffering burns on 90 percent of his body.
The incident took place right after 8 a.m. at the establishment located in the 15300 block of Sherman Way, where LAPD Officer Liliana Preciado says the 60-year-old man locked himself inside the bathroom, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said witnesses at the coffee shop heard "an explosive sound" moments later, and that the man then staggered out of the bathroom and fell on the ground near the entrance, engulfed in flames. Customers helped put the flames out before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Los Angeles fire officials say the victim suffered "extensive burns" and believe he could be a transient, NBC Southern California reported.
Police believe the incident was a suicide attempt, and the LAFD is currently conducting an investigation into the situation.
