Texans have been given the privilege to join the ‘Name The Shuttle’ contest as part of the outdoor exhibit at Space Center Houston which will open two years from now.
The contest, which will run until September 2 (Labor Day), is accepting entries from those who are 18 years old and above. They should be legally residing in Texas. A maximum of one entry for each participant is allowed in a day. In the case there are duplicated entries received, the credit will go to the first one who submitted the entry based on the time it was received. Registration should be done in the contest website.
The newly named mock-up shuttle will be paired with the historic 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft of NASA. It is the real jumbo jet that hovered NASA’s space-flown orbiters across the country. The pair will then become Space Center Houston’s six-story centerpiece which will be featured in its outdoor exhibit that is worth a whopping $12 million.
There are two things that should be remembered when thinking about the name of the shuttle. It should symbolize the spirit of Texas and it should reflect the state’s unique qualities of optimism, independence, and can-do character.
There will be a panel of judges that will choose the shuttle’s winning name. The lucky winner will be announced in public on September 10. Aside from having the privilege of naming the shuttle replica and being invited at the opening ceremony, the winner will also receive a VIP trip to Space Center Houston for a duration of three days along with four invited guests of his choice.
The total prize package includes a VIP exhibit tour of Space Center Houston, a special tour at Johnson Space Center for ‘behind the scenes’ experience, accommodations and gift cards to compensate expenses on food and fuel, and a year’s supply of fresh bread courtesy of Mrs Baird Bakery.
