Colorado police were able to catch a suspected criminal on the run thanks to one quick-witted family goat, KKTV reported.
Dwight, the Browning family's six-year-old goat, was hailed a hero after he helped alert his family to the suspect hiding in a brush behind their house in Fountain, Colorado, last Friday evening.
The family notified police and the suspect, 22-year-old Joseph Kimsey, is now being held at the El Paso County Jail on a slew of felony charges- including an unrelated charge for animal abuse. Kimsey also goes by the name Joseph Hargett.
Earlier Friday, Colorado State Patrol released a warning to families in the area about a man who fled police after a traffic stop on Interstate 25, KKTV reported. Troopers ordered Kimsey, who was wanted on the animal abuse charge, to stop his pickup truck but he got off the nearest exit and continued driving across nearby fields before abandoning the vehicle.
Meanwhile, at the Browning home, John Browning and Kathy Zupancic were preparing to leave. John was about to make sure no one was hanging around the property when he noticed Dwight's gaze was focused on something.
"One more time I'll just quickly check all the doors and windows and make sure they're locked, and I just happened to glance down this way [points at his goat], and I said 'Kathy, Dwight's looking at someone,' " John Browning told the station.
At that moment, Kimsey emerged from the brush behind their house and headed towards their neighbor's house. The Brownings immediately called 911 before warning their neighbor about the fugitive outside.
Kimsey surrendered when deputies arrived. He was arrested and charged with speeding, reckless driving and drug possession among other charges. He also faces the December 2014 charge for animal abuse/neglect.
Dwight the goat could not immediately comment on the situation. But his family is eternally grateful for his sharp eye.
"He deserves a key to the city!" said John's son Nick Browning.
