Brett Favre to Have His Number Retired?; CEO Murphy Discusses Possiblity

Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy said Saturday future Hall of Famer and former Packer Brett Favre “deserves to have his number retired for what he accomplished and meant to the Packers during his time here,” according to NFL.com.

Murphy’s comments about retiring Favre’s jersey were a response to a question from a fan. Murphy answered the fan’s inquiry through his monthly column on the Packers website, “Murphy Takes 5.”

The question, which came from Jae in Kalamazoo, Michigan, read:

What happened to retiring Brett Favre’s jersey at Lambeau? I know he didn't end it there, but he made me a believer in the Green & Gold.

Murphy added in his column:

I though Aaron Rodgers and Brett jointly presenting the Comeback Player of the Year Award at the NFL Honors program was a great first step. It is really just a question of timing in terms of retiring his jersey. The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization. Brett will be a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2016, and we would like to retire his number prior to his induction."

This is not the first time Murphy has brought up the possibility of retiring the 11-time Pro-Bowler’s number. In 2012, Murphy said the Packers planned to hand Favre the accolade within a few years. However, at the time the two sides were still in the midst of a feud. Favre and current Packers quarterback Rodgers were also at odds. However, it seems they have reconciled and everyone is on the same page. Therefore, in a few years, being a Green Bay Packer and wearing the number 4 will no longer be possible.
