"Star Trek" fans will be happy to hear about a new device that only takes seconds to record your vital signs.
Scanadu's gadget, called Scanadu Scout, is reminiscent of the Tricorder scanning device from the popular science fiction franchise, using sensors to capture your heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level and other physiological information, according to Discovery News.
Users will also be treated with a complete electrocardiography (ECG) reading, and all of this data is collected in 10 seconds.
Information will then be sent to a smartphone app via Bluetooth, and users can learn how their vital signs are affected by activities, food, beverages and even other people, Discovery News reported. The device can also give collected data to doctors, who then have an opportunity to provide more information to the user.
The Scout's abilities earned it a spot among the 10 finalists in the Qualcomm Tricorder XPrize competition, the winner of which will be announced later this year.
Scanadu managed to raise over $1.6 million with its Indiegogo campaign for the Scout and recently started shipping the product to backers, Discovery News reported. While the Silicon Valley-based company isn't selling the Scout at the moment, the device is expected to be available for less than $200.
The Scout is not the only product in development at Scanadu, as the company is also working on a device called ScanaFlo that lets you take a urine test at home to check for preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, urinary tract infections and other issues with pregnancy. Those suffering from diabetes can also use the device to obtain data about their glucose levels.
