California Metrolink Train Collides With Truck; 30 Injured

A California commuter train derailed after it collided with a truck on the tracks early Tuesday morning, injuring 30 people, officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The Metrolink commuter train was traveling at the Rice Road crossing in Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles, at around 6 a.m. when the collision occurred, Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson told the newspaper.

Four of the train's cars were derailed but three were completely toppled over and the truck was set on fire. The collision is being considered as "multi-causalty," the Ventura County Fire Department told the LA Times. But officials did not give a number.

Images from the scene in Oxnard show multiple emergency vehicles and tarps laid out where those injured were treated.

The incident comes a year after Metrolink installed a high-tech safety system along parts of its 512-mile system in Southern California, the newspaper reported. It was installed after a deadly Metrolink collision with a freight train in 2008 that killed 25 people.

The National Transportation Safety Board- which is also investigating this month's deadly Metro-North crash outside New York City, said they are "aware of the rail accident near Oxnard, CA and are currently gathering information about the event."
