A University of Illinois-Chicago student has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female classmate after he allegedly attempted to recreate scenes from the erotic movie "Fifty Shades of Grey."
Mohammad Hossain, 19, has been accused of tying up his victim, whipping and punching her before raping her in his dormitory, prosecutors said on Monday. He has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, a felony, Chicago Tribune reported.
Although the engineering freshman admitted to authorities that he had assaulted the woman, he claimed that they had been "re-enacting scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey," which feature scenes of bondage and sadomasochism.
On Saturday evening, Hossain and the unidentified woman went to his dorm room. Over there, he allegedly went on to use restraints and sexual violence without the woman's consent, Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Karr told Chicago Tribune.
After the victim removed her clothing upon his request, except her bra and underwear, he tied her hands and legs with belts. Then, he used a necktie to cover her mouth and pulled a knit cap over her eyes, before removing her underwear to strike her several times, Karr told the Cook County court.
Even though the victim "began shaking her head and crying," begging him to stop, Hossain continued to hit her with the belt, punched her several times and then sexually assaulted her, according to UK MailOnline.
Following the incident, the alleged victim told someone about having been sexually assaulted, after which the police was contacted.
Upon initial questioning by campus police, the 19-year-old student confessed to "doing something wrong."
Meanwhile, Hossain remains in custody on a $500,000 bail. His lawyer claims he thought the sex was consensual.
The hit film Fifty Shades of Grey is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by British author E.L. James, TIME reported.
The film, which stars James Dornan as BDSM-loving billionaire Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as innocent college student Anastasia Ana Steele, spent a second weekend at the top of the U.S. and Canadian box office charts.
