Jason Jones scratched his name from contention to replace Jon Stewart as host of "The Daily Show" when he announced his exit from the show via Twitter on Tuesday.
"For 9 & 1/2 years, I have worked at of the greatest TV shows of all time. But... It is time to go," he tweeted. "That said, I am ecstatic to announce that I'm about to make another great show over @tbsveryfunny."
TBS picked up the half-hour comedy for a 10-episode order from Jones, who will co-executive produce the series with his wife and fellow "Daily Show" correspondent, Samantha Bee. The couple wrote the project based on their own experiences with family getaways, according to TBS.
The new series will follow a couple and their two young kids as they take a road trip to Florida in this honest and dark comedy. Jones stars as unfiltered dad Nate, who packs his wife, Robin (Natalie Zea), along with their rebellious daughter Delilah (Gerasimovich) and simpleton son Jared (Liam Carroll), into the family car for what Nate is convinced will be the adventure of a lifetime.
Every leg of their trip is fraught with unforeseen disaster as they encounter one hellish turn after another. The creators plan to have each season revolve around a different family adventure.
"This show delivers on exactly the direction we are taking our TBS comedies - honest, smart and provocative," Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS, said in a release.
"We couldn't be happier to be in business with Sam and Jason on what we hope will be the first of many more projects together. Watching them step into the creator/executive producer role on the pilot really allowed the characters and the show to find solid footing from the very first frame. We can't wait to see where they take this mildly dysfunctional family."
Comedy Central claims it has a short-list of potential candidates to replace Stewart, but the network has not revealed any of the names in contention. Jones and Bee temporarily filled in one night when Stewart called out sick. Their other former correspondent John Oliver was then asked to fill in as host of "The Daily Show" when Stewart went to shoot his film "Rosewater" for three months in 2013.
Correspondent Jessica Williams took herself out of the running, citing her young age (25) as the reason. Other possible candidates speculated upon include Aisha Tyler, Joel McHale, Chris Hardwick and Patton Oswalt, as well as "Daily Show" correspondents Aasif Mandvi and Jordan Klepper.
Jones did not announce when or if he has taped his final show at "The Daily Show." Bee also has made no announcement if she will follow her husband out the door.
