Reddit is one of the key places online that has provided an outlet for marketing, viral content and a lot of good. But it is also a site that has hosted some terrible activities, including parts of the leaks of celebrity nudes, revenge porn and doxxing. These events have caused many to view the site with disdain and hatred. However, the site is trying to incorporate a policy that may help fix those issues.
Reddit revealed on its site Tuesday that they would no longer host nude images on their site.
"No matter who you are, if a photograph, video, or digital image of you in a state of nudity, sexual excitement, or engaged in any act of sexual conduct, is posted or linked to on Reddit without your permission, it is prohibited on Reddit," the company wrote, adding that it will also remove "violent personalized images" when users report them.
In order to incorporate the policy changes effectively, Reddit is offering a series of tutorials for Reddit moderators so that they can effectively use the tools on the site to moderate and control content in order to build community and make sure this content won't be posted on there.
This policy changes come six months after hackers leaked nude photos taken by a number of celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and more. Many people considered Reddit partly liable for the events, especially since the company didn't have any policies that punish such illicit behavior. Reddit has also been a home for revenge porn; the practice of uploading nudes of individuals one has an extreme dislike/hatred for. Those who are involved in hosting such material online can be put in prison for it.
A policy shift like Reddit's current shift would protect the site and their users from such content, as well as the legal ramifications for hosting such content in the US.
