Instagram Sets New Photo-Sharing Record on Thanksgiving

Instagram set a new record of people sharing photographs through the social networking site this Thanksgiving.

An occasion without pictures is incompletely and a picture that is not shared with loved ones loses its charm. Over the last few years the best way to let your friends know what you're up to and share the festive spirit is by putting up pictures on social networking sites.

And that's exactly what Instagram users did this Thanksgiving. In fact, the site set an all new record of photo sharing in the US this thanksgiving with more than 10 million photos shared at a rate of 226 per second during the peak at 12:40 p.m. PST.

For several hours on Thursday, more than 200 photos per second per being shared on the site.

"We're thrilled to see people use Instagram to share their holidays. Whether celebrating with friends and family or sharing photos with them halfway across the globe, we're excited to see the intimacy and immediacy of the Instagram experience bring us all closer together over this holiday season," officials of the company said in a report published in USA Today.

This made it the biggest and busiest day for the mobile photo sharing service. Officials say the number of photos shared on Thanksgiving were more than double the number of photos shared the day before.

These numbers are said to be phenomenal as on an average Instagram sees 5 million photos shared daily. However, it still has a long way to go when compared to Facebook which witnesses an average of 300 million photo-uploads daily. This has been cited as one of the reasons why Facebook bought Instagram and plans to see it grown independently in the future.

For now, officials of Instagram are happy and busy celebrating their achievement.

"Overall, the day broke all Instagram records as we saw the number of shared photos more than double from the day before, making it our busiest day so far," Instagram said in a blog post today.
