Although the New York Jets reportedly are a contender to sign running back C.J. Spiller in free agency, he didn't rule out re-signing with the Buffalo Bills. Spiller told SiriusXM NFL Radio this week that the ball is in Buffalo's court if they want to bring him back.
Spiller was linked to New York earlier in the week, and his public praise Tuesday for Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey further fueled speculation he may end up in Florham Park for the 2015 season. In the same interview, though, Spiller said him leaving Buffalo wasn't a sure thing.
"There's a possibility that I could be in a Bills uniform," Spiller said, via NFL.com. "We never know how this situation is going to play out. The organization knows that I want to be there, so pretty much the ball is in their court. At the same time we're going to weigh all our options and see what suits me best. The biggest thing is you want to go somewhere where you're wanted. That's the biggest thing. That's pretty much how I'm approaching this thing. I'm looking forward to it."
As for Buffalo, general manager Doug Whaley would like to bring Spiller back but admitted the two sides aren't close to agreeing on a new contract.
"We're hoping we can close the gap and get the deal done," said Whaley last week, according to NFL.com. "There's going to have to be some work done, but I'm confident that we'll each come to the table with an open mind and try to get a deal done that's great for both sides."
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported Monday he had heard chatter linking Spiller to the Jets, and ESPN's Rich Cimini reported the next day that the Jets were expected to pursue the 27-year-old in free agency.
