Yesterday it was rumored that Percy Harvin may draw interest from the New England Patriots should he become available. Today, Reggie Bush's name is being thrown around as a possible addition to the Super Bowl champions.
Bush, who was released by the Detroit Lions earlier this week, would make sense if the Pats are considering letting running back Shane Vereen walk in free agency.
"Bush, who turns 30 on March 2, would project to the same type of role in the Patriots' offense as Vereen," Mike Reiss of ESPN wrote. "He is still a top pass-catching back when healthy and that is something the Patriots value highly. Bush had 94 receptions over the past two seasons, while Vereen had 99."
Vereen would be the preferred back of the two, as he is four years younger than Bush. However, the Pats may not be able to afford him. Vereen has said that he is seeking a contract worth at least $5 million annually and New England must first figure out what to do with cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Devin McCourty before turning their attention to the ball carrier.
"Timing could be a factor, as free agency begins March 10," Reiss wrote. "If the Patriots have a sense they might lose Vereen regardless, would that expedite talks with Bush as a possible replacement?"
Offensive coaches already on New England's staff have a history with Bush. Both Brian Daboll and Dave DeGuglielmo were with Bush in Miami in 2011, the same year he produced his first 1,000 yard rushing season. Although Bush has missed seven games over the last two years, his familiarity with New England's staff and his fit in this offense could lead to a possible partnership.
