USA begins its bid for the Gold Cup trophy on Tuesday against Belize. A win Tuesday night will help USA move ahead in Group C, which also contains Costa Rica and Cuba.
The USA squad is a melting pot of experienced World Cup veterans and young, largely unproven players with upside. The CONCACAF Gold Cup will serve as an audition for players to impress manager Jurgen Klinsmann and earn a spot on his roster for the upcoming qualifiers, as well as next year's World Cup.
Belize is the underdog. The small country is making its first appearance in a major international tournament, Yahoo! Sports reports. While an upset by Belize would be huge, it's unlikely. Belize is ranked No. 130 by FIFA, and only two members of its squad play outside of the country's semi-professional team.
The team's best hope is striker Deon McCauley, who participated in camp with the Portland Timbers at the start of the year.
The US hasn't played in the Gold Cup since 2011. The team's last outing in the tournament ended with a 4-2 rout by Mexico in the championship final. The beating was one of the reasons then-coach Bob Bradley lost his job, which ultimately passed to Klinsmann.
Landon Donovan returns to his first major USMNT tournament since last summer. As one of five returning players from the USA's 2011 Gold Cup defeat, Donovan looks to not only atone for the loss, but also prove he deserves a roster spot for the qualifiers and World Cup.
Tuesday is the USMNT's first meeting with Belize.
