Two men performed an emergency c-section on the side of a road in Australia when they found a dead pregnant wombat who was hit by a car and saved the infant's life.
Dmrenzo Kotze, 21, and Chris Dimasi, 20, spotted the wombat on a dirt road so they pulled over to move the animal off the road. During their stop they noticed movements in the stomach of the wombat and realized she was pregnant, reported NT News.
The men decided that Dimasi should perform the emergency "surgery" since he works as an abattoir, Kotze told NT News.
"After finding a knife, we agreed to cut it open an get what ever it was out," Dimasi wrote on Facebook. "After all this we gave the baby a wash and found a woman who looks after them around that area, the baby was on the way to full health again. I would like to say Chris and myself are now proud fathers of 3 month old wombat Jeffery."
Friends of the men pointed them in the direction of the rescue Fauna Rescue SA. Jeffery, who the rescue renamed "Whisper," is now in the hands of the rescue, where he will sleep under a heat pad until he is strong enough to be housed in an enclosure. The rescue plans to release him into the wild when he is ready, reported NT News.
Fauna Rescue SA told NT News that if the men hadn't delivered the wombat, he would have died within a day.
The c-section was recorded by Kotze in a graphic video.
