It's still hard to believe that DeMarco Murray, last season's leading rusher in the NFL, is set to hit free agency without a new deal from the Dallas Cowboys.
But alas, this is the salary cap-driven NFL world we live in and Murray, while a talented and capable back, doesn't provide elite skills and just so happens to be entering free agency for a Dallas team also forced to pony up major dough for dominant wide receiver Dez Bryant.
Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones told Fox Sports recently that the team will allow Murray to "get some peace and see what's out in the market."
With Murray set to hit free agency, would the Indianapolis Colts, dealing with one of the worst running back depth charts in the league, make sense as a landing spot?
"Indy has been touted as a suitor for Adrian Peterson, but Murray would amount to the next best thing for a team ready to move on from Trent Richardson," writes Marc Sessler of NFL.com.
Richardson, acquired from the Cleveland Browns for a first-round draft pick, has been an abysmal failure for the Colts, culminating in his being inactive for the team's AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos this year.
Ahmad Bradshaw is electric when healthy - he's simply never healthy. And Boom Herron doesn't seem to possess the capabilities or ball security to be an every down back.
Murray toted the rock 392 times last year, amassing 1,845 yards on the ground behind what is widely considering one of the best offensive lines in the league. He also added 57 receptions for 416 yards.
The high number of touches combined with the strength of the Cowboys line certainly takes some of the shine off of Murray's heavy production, but beggars can't necessarily be choosers and if the Colts are to take the next step from good team to perennial contender, adding Murray would go a long toward making that dream a reality.
