Mumford & Sons are one of many bands that have a signature sound. The banjo, kick drum, and quiet verses are evident on almost all of their songs. That will soon change though.
On Monday, the indie/folk rockers announced their third studio album, "Wilder Mind," will be released on May 4 via Glassnote Records.
In a statement, front man Marcus Mumford explained that the band unanimously decided to switch up their sound on the upcoming record.
"Towards the end of the 'Babel' tour, we'd always play new songs during sound checks, and none of them featured the banjo, or a kick-drum," singer Marcus Mumford said in a statement, according to the LA Times. "We didn't say: 'No acoustic instruments.' But I think all of us had this desire to shake it up. The songwriting hasn't changed drastically; it was led more by a desire to not do the same thing again."
Mumford also told Rolling Stone that "doing the same thing, or the same instrumentation again, just wasn't for us."
In support of the album, Mumford & Sons are visiting smaller cities that don't usually attract bigger bands. Titled "Gentlemen of the Road," each stop on the tour gets two days of music from Mumford & Sons and a handful of other bands. It kicks off on June 5 and 6 in Seaside Heights, N.J., where The Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, The Vaccines, The Maccabees, Dawes, The Very Best and Jenny Lewis, among others, will also be playing.
