The New York Jets spent last season dealing with a dearth of talent and by season's end, healthy bodies, at the cornerback position thanks in large part to a glaring lack of foresight from former Jets GM John Idzik.
There's no doubting the position will garner much attention from new head coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan this offseason, it's simply a matter of where and when.
According to the latest report, from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets owner Woody Johnson is preparing a major push for former Jet and All-Pro, All-World cornerback Darrelle Revis.
"The Daily News has learned that Johnson has been involved in serious internal discussions with Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to make a push for perennial All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis if/when he becomes a free agent next week," writes Mehta.
Johnson got in a bit of hot water at his season-ending news conference in December when he "misspoke" about Revis - something very close to tampering - while led to charges from New England.
It hasn't deterred Johnson from continuing his pursuit of Revis.
The Patriots, per Mehta (and common sense) are not expected to exercise the $20 million option available in Revis' contract, making him a free agent.
Revis of course was part of the defensive effort that helped the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick win Super Bowl XLIX. With an NFL Championship to his name - a game in which he allowed only a single reception to Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin, albeit for a touchdown (thanks ref!) - along with six Pro-Bowl selections, Revis will have plenty of suitors for his services should he hit the NFL's open market in March.
The Jets though, most likely have the inside track, as they drafted Revis in the first-round of the 2007 NFL Draft and have an intimate knowledge of his personality and presumably a close relationship.
The need for New York aligns nicely as well.
Bowles prefers a blitz-heavy defensive scheme that requires strong press-man cover cornerbacks - skills that Revis possesses in spades.
There's always the possibility that Revis could desire a reunion with his former Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, now in the top spot in Buffalo, but the Bills have a number of good young cornerbacks and may not see the need to break the bank on Revis.
