Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions has arguably been the best wide receiver in the NFL for the past few years—and he can get better, says Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, according to NFL.com.
"I mean, he thinks he can, which is all that matters," said the Georgia product speaking about Johnson on the NFL Network’s “NFL AM”. "That guy works harder than anybody I know, and he thinks he can get better, so I wouldn't put anything past him. He's a guy that can obviously run all the routes, inside, outside, make all the catches, and is a smart football player and a really good teammate."
Although Johnson’s touchdown numbers were down he still put up 1,964 receiving yards and 122 receptions which are both career highs. He was also the leader among wide receivers in both those categories for the 2012 season.
Johnson has led the league in receptions the past two seasons and was second in the League in TDs in the 2011 season.
Also, in 2012 Johnson was able to break Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice’s single season record for receiving yards. (Rice is widely believed to be the greatest receiver of all time)
It is possible in the upcoming season that “Megatron” will not get as much chances to put up the kind of numbers he did last year. Stafford said the Lions don’t want to throw the ball over 700 times a season. "We've got to find a way to be more explosive in the run game and more balanced as well,” he explained.
Stafford recently signed an extension with the Lions for three years, $53 million.
