Ex-Denver Nuggets coach Brian Shaw reportedly is interested in taking over the Orlando Magic's coach vacancy. Other potential candidates include Scott Skiles, Vinny Del Negro and Mark Jackson.
Shaw wants to coach the Magic, according to Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel.
"Brian Shaw played in Orlando and now he relishes the chance to return as the Magic's coach," Schmitz wrote Friday. "A person close to Shaw told the Orlando Sentinel that the former Magic guard would 'absolutely' be 'very interested' if or when the job opens."
Denver fired Shaw on Tuesday, two days after the team's sixth straight loss. Reports from ESPN and local beat writers indicated there was a disconnect between Shaw and his players, which may have led - along with the team's 20-39 record at the time - to his firing.
Per ESPN:
"Shaw complained on numerous occasions to Nuggets management about the maturity and professionalism of some of the players but was told to try to work through the issues, sources told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne. He experimented with canceling shootarounds, in an effort to work with the players. But it had become clear to all involved that the situation wasn't salvageable."
Shaw, though, likely has competition for Magic's vacancy. A report from ESPN in February indicated Skiles, who coached the Milwaukee Bucks from 2008 to 2013, could be the frontrunner for the job in Orlando.
"Scott Skiles: Last week, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard wrote that Skiles, a former Orlando player, might be the frontrunner for the job," ESPN's Nick Borges wrote on Feb. 5. "Skiles has been the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks."
Other names available include Jackson, Del Negro, Michael Malone. Some assistants who could get interview requests include Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Tyronn Lue, Golden State Warriors coach Alvin Gentry and Indiana Pacers assistant Nate McMillan.
Orlando fired Jacque Vaughn on Feb. 5. Magic assistant James Borrego was subsequently promoted to interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
