‘District 9’ Sequel Still Happening, Neill Blomkamp Says

First there was "District 9," which blew everyone away. It was a critical and financial success by every measurement. Then came "Elysium," which failed to deliver on its high-minded concept. Now, we have "Chappie," which is unfortunately falling more in line with the latter than the former, according to critics.

Director Neill Blomkamp has had an interesting career to this point. Regardless of how "Chappie" ends up doing at the box office or in the minds of critics, Blomkamp's career will continue to be interesting. His next film will be a brand new installment in the storied "Alien" franchise, which promises to excite die-hard fans and casual sci-fi lovers alike. But it is his breakout success that apparently keeps calling his name.

Blomkamp told IGN that he hopes to make the long-anticipated sequel to "District 9" at some point in the near future.

"I feel like Chappie is the end of three films that have a similar stylistic approach to them...Moving forward I would love to realize this idea of District 10 - I have every intention to do it, I just need to find the right time to do it - to not go back to Johannesburg and shoot something similar, yet."

Fans have clamored for a sequel to "District 9" since its release back in 2009. What's funny is that Blomkamp never realized how primed his first feature length film was for a sequel until he was finishing up the editing process. His original intentions were to make an interesting standalone sci-fi film.

"It was a completely self-contained story about the Nazi becoming the Holocaust victim, basically. It was the oppressor becoming the oppressed. And when it's based on a character like that, it ends on that character. The inadvertent world creation that came with it, which to me is my perfect kind of thing that I love - having a bunch of weird alien weapons in the back of a shack that you can discover - that's just ripe for creative insanity, so it took a few years to process what that could be.

"I think the story that I have now is what I would want to see as a fan of the first film, I think. I know I would want to see it - I assume other people would. It's good man!"
