"Supergirl" has revealed the first look at Melissa Benoist in her superhero costume.
Benoist will suit up as the DC Comics character Supergirl in the new CBS series, currently shooting its pilot in Los Angeles. Colleen Atwood, a three-time Oscar winner, designed the costume which includes the signature "S" on the chest like Supergirl's cousin Superman.
"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today," Atwood said in a statement.
The "Glee" alum stars as Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl who escapes the planet Krypton before its absolute destruction and lands on Earth. As a child, she's fostered by the Danvers family who taught her to be careful with her powers, which she shares with her older super cousin.
"Supergirl" will join Kara's story at 24 when she finally decides to embrace her powers after having to suppress them for so long. An unexpected disaster will force her hand and she soon feels "energized by her heroic deed," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The young woman starts using her powers to help the people of her city and, in turn, the citizens call her "Supergirl."
CBS gave "Supergirl" a series commitment last September, and it's likely to get picked up for the 2015-2016 fall TV season. Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler will serve as executive producers.
