A Canadian man received more than a balanced breakfast when he recently opened a box of Frosted Flakes cereal to find a hand-written message inside.
The first thing Stephane Gaudette, of Timmins, Ontario, noticed when he opened the cereal box were the words "Please read the bag" written in black marker, he told the CBC radio show As It Happens.
It was a note saying the cereal box was the last to be produced at a London, Ontario, Kellogg's factory before it closed in December 2014.
"This is the very last bag of Canadian cereal for the Canadian market from Kellog's," reads the message that includes the names of three factory workers.
Gaudette said he first had mixed feelings about the note, including a concern his cereal had been tampered with. But that was followed by a sense of admiration and respect.
"When I saw the message, my emotions stared changing," Gaudette told As It Happens. "It led to a certain sadness and awe, in a sense. It was a very odd feeling because I realized the significance of [the package]."
The Kellogg's plant had been open for 107 years before it closed its doors on Dec. 5. The employees who signed the bag also put the number of years they worked there- one for 24 years, one for 28 and one for 29.
Two of their names are Ray Gonsalvez and Frasier McAuley.
The one who worked there 24 years, Mike Cascadden, told As It Happens he couldn't believe it when he learned his message was found. Four generations in his family worked at the London plant.
"I couldn't sleep for the rest of the day. It was a whirlwind day of emotions," he said. "It was happy and sad at the same time."
Both Cascadden and Gaudette said they hope to meet soon. The Gaudette family currently still has the unopened cereal bag.
