"Supergirl" will center its story on a 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, but it will share some flash back scenes with a younger version of the DC superhero.
CBS has cast Malina Weissman to play the young Kara a.k.a. Supergirl in the new series starring Melissa Benoist, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Weissman will guest-star in the pilot and confirms reports that the show will flash back to female superhero's early childhood years.
Kara escaped her home planet of Krypton before its destruction and landed on Earth. The Danvers family took her in as a foster child and taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her cousin Superman).
Weissman previously starred as the younger version of Megan Fox's character in 2014's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
She joins a growing cast that includes Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olson), David Harewood (Hank Henshaw), Chyler Leigh (Alexandra "Alex" Danvers) and Laura Benanti, who will recur as Supergirl's mother Alura Zor-El .
The show will also feature appearances by Helen Slater, who originated the role of Kara Zor-El on screen in the 1984 movie "Supergirl," and Dean Cain, who played Superman in the '90s TV show, "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." Their roles remain a unknown.
CBS gave "Supergirl" a series commitment last September, and it's likely to get picked up for the 2015-2016 fall TV season. Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler will serve as executive producers.
