Dallas Cowboys RUMORS: CJ Spiller Eyed In NFL Free Agency As DeMarco Murray Replacement?

It seems the Dallas Cowboys have not made any efforts to express their interest in seeing last season's NFL leading rusher, DeMarco Murray, return to the team for next season, leading to rampant speculation of who could take over as the main back in 'Big D'.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, former Buffalo Bills running back CJ Spiller could be a name to watch once the NFL free agency period officially kicks off.

"Twitter detective @CowboysNation notes DeMarco Murray removed all Cowboy mentions from his Twitter profile. Ominous. Watch CJ Spiller there," tweeted Rapoport.

Earlier, amid a flurry of reports regarding the fact that Murray had altered his twitter profile in a way that removed all references to the Cowboys, Adam Schefter of ESPN revealed that Dallas, in fact, hasn't had any contact with their lead back in several days.

"Now we know why DeMarco Murray has deleted Cowboys' references on his Twitter account: team has not called him since last week, per source," Schefter tweeted.

With the Cowboys showing little interest in Murray to this point, it potentially opens the door for an outside addition, possibly of a guy with a little more tread on his tires and a little more wiggle to his game; a guy like Spiller.

Spiller appeared in only nine games last season, the fewest of his career, thanks to a collarbone injury. The former first-round pick is an electric back who provides immense versatility, though - his best season came in 2012 when he rushed for 1,244 yards on 207 carries and added 43 receptions for 459 yards.

As Kevin Patra of NFL.com notes, a Spiller addition wouldn't seem so much a replacement for Murray as it would an upgrade on the other backs - Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle - already on the roster.

"Spiller would be an interesting signing for the Cowboys. He's not the power back like Murray and often dances or bounces the ball outside, which wouldn't be a perfect mesh with Dallas' blocking scheme. Spiller would essentially be a better version of the backs currently on the roster," writes Patra.

Murray, of course, led the league in rushing last season, finished with 1,845 yards rushing on 392 carries. He managed the feat behind the Cowboys offensive line though, considered by many to be the best in the league.

Perhaps Cowboys GM/owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett simply believe they'll be able to get ample production out of the main backfield spot without having to fork over much in the way of guaranteed money thanks to their strength up front.
