Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker, in the movie "The Amazing Spider Man 2," thinks the superhero needs to explore his sexuality. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said he thinks it would be great if Spider-Man was gay and that his love interest known as MJ be a man.
"I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," Garfield told Entertainment Weekly. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking!... So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
Garfield is so on board with the idea that he talked to the film's producer, Matt Tolmach, and the director, Marc Webb, about his idea, the Daily Beast reports. Garfield even has an actor in mind to play Parker's boyfriend, Michael B. Jordan who stars in the move "Fruitvale Station."
"I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since 'The Wire,'" Garfield said. "He's so charismatic and talented. I'd be even better - we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
Not everyone seems as enthusiastic about the idea as Garfield is. When Entertainment Weekly asked Webb about the idea of making Spider-Man gay in the next movie he responded with: "Uh, are you kidding?" adding that the actor has approached him with the idea of Jordan as the new love interest.
For now it's safe to say that Spidey will remain straight in the next movie. Actress Shailene Woodley was originally cast to play Mary Jane but her scenes were cut from the movie. Garfield recently confirmed on his Twitter page that MJ (the girl) will be returning for the third "Spider-Man" movie but did not say if Woodley will be playing her.
It's not surprising that the 29-year-old actor is excited about trying to change the sexual orientation in the classic comic book hero. He has been extremely vocal about his stance on same-sex marriage.
"Of course I'm in favor of marriage equality. Same-sex couples should have the same rights as anybody else," he told The Times of London. "There is no argument against equality."
Do you think Spider-Man should be gay?
