The Miami Dolphins inked Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler to contracts in free agency back in 2013. Now, the team is attempting a re-do.
The Dolphins are reportedly trying to trade both players by this afternoon.
"A source told NFL on Fox that the Dolphins are trying to deal Ellerbe and Wheeler before the league's calendar year begins at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday," Alex Marvez wrote. "If unable to find a suitor, Miami is expected to release both players to clear salary-cap space."
Ellerbe is set to count almost $9.9 million against the salary cap while Wheeler carries a hit of $4 million. Neither player lived up to their deals thanks to ineffectiveness and/or injuries. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter even reported last week that the Dolphins were getting ready to release Wheeler as a post-June 1 cut in order to save $3 million in 2015 cap space.
The most realistic outcome will be a straight release of both players as Miami opens up the necessary cap space to sign free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Suh has reportedly agreed to a six-year deal worth $114 million ($60 million in guaranteed money) and is expected to officially sign a contract with Miami as soon as the new league year starts alter today.
