Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will count $14 million against the salary cap in 2015, the sixth highest mark in the league for receivers. But considering that Bowe only caught 60 passes for 754 yards and zero touchdowns last year, Kansas City is not getting a good return on their investment. As such, the team is expected to release the veteran pass catcher sometime in the near future. This belief was only reinforced after the Chiefs signed Jeremy Maclin in free agency.
"Indications point to Chiefs releasing WR Dwayne Bowe this week," ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter tweeted.
So where will Bowe end up? ESPN Baltimore Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley believes Bowe could be a useful target for Joe Flacco, especially after losing Torrey Smith to the San Francisco 49ers.
"Bowe...might fall under general manager Ozzie Newsome's mantra 'right player, right price.' Bowe's price will be lower than [Andre] Johnson's because he's considered an underachiever who hasn't caught more than 60 passes over the past three seasons and failed to score a touchdown last season. But has his production been the result of catching passes from Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn, and Alex Smith since 2012? He has the distinction of being the fastest Chiefs player to get 6,000 yards receiving (95 games), and he is three years younger than Johnson. Bowe's strength is running quick slants over the middle and breaking tackles to gain yards after the catch. He has been described as a model teammate, which would likely get relayed to John Harbaugh from Andy Reid."
Steve Smith Sr. led all Baltimore pass-catchers with 79 receptions for 1,065 yards and six touchdowns. But Smith will be 36 when next season rolls around and counting on him to consistently find the fountain of youth is unwise. Adding a wide receiver is a must for the Ravens this offseason and Bowe could be the type of veteran player who has some gas left in the tank.
