The New York Jets may have already nabbed Darrelle Revis and Buster Skrine, but they're not done remaking what had become possibly the worst secondary in the NFL last season.
The Jets, per a report from Seth Walder of The New York Daily News, are pushing to sign Revis' former backfield mate with the Jets, Antonio Cromartie.
"Darrelle Revis is returning to the Jets, and his old counterpart Antonio Cromartie, may join him there. The team was involved in serious discussions with Cromartie late Tuesday, according to sources," writes Walder.
New Jets head coach Todd Bowles was Cromartie's defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals last season before taking over the top spot in New York.
The 31-year-old Cromartie was cut by the Jets after a down 2013 season, but performed well as the No. 2 to Patrick Peterson in Arizona.
With Skrine, who started all 16 games for the Browns last season and Revis, the game's premier cover cornerback already in the fold, the addition of Cromartie would make the Jets the envy of the NFL in terms of their secondary talent.
Of course, money will become an issue at some point.
With Cromartie on the downside of his career, his contract demands aren't likely to be particularly hefty, but with Revis inked to a five-year, $70 million deal and Skrine getting a not-too-shabby, four-year deal for $25 million with $13 million guaranteed, New York has suddenly allocated a significant portion of its cap just to the secondary.
With last year's first-round pick Calvin Pryor manning one safety spot and Dee Milliner, the 2013 first-round pick who lost his 2014 season to injury still in the fold, perhaps spending on Cromartie, Revis and Skrine in the short-term is an acceptable proposition.
