The article was corrected as per a statement from the St. Louis Police Department. The Webster Grove office has been a member of the force for seven years, not five years, as previously reported.
Area police departments sent officers to Ferguson earlier in the night as 60 to 70 protesters arrived in front of the police department building, blocking roads and sidewalks, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Protesters seemed to be divided, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. One group was unhappy with the resignations of City Manager John Shaw and Police Chief Thomas Jackson and gathered, chanting in unison. Another group of protesters was angry, violent and even fighting amongst themselves.
"I've said many times we cannot sustain this without problems and that's not a reflection of those expressing their first amendment rights," Belmar said, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "But this is a very dangerous environment for our officers to work in."
South Florissant Road in front of the police station was closed and declared a crime scene. Belmar said the shots came across Florissant Road. Witnesses on the scene told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the shots came from a block of homes on Tiffin Avenue that intersects West Florissant Avenue, where the police department is located.
The only arrests made so far are those that occurred before the gunfire.
