With Netflix's buying up new content from all over the place, as well as HBO Now announcing its partnership with Apple on Monday, it's clear that content creators have a very special set of abilities that companies need to access.
That's why Verizon announced its partnership with popular YouTube channel Awesomeness TV and Dreamworks TV on Thursday. The popular internet service provider will work with these two content creators to create a new media channel that will host over 200 hours of new content in its first year. Early reports reveal that this channel will only be available on mobile devices.
"At Verizon, we're committed to working with only the best and most innovative content providers, like AwesomenessTV, and driving opportunities as new content models emerge and customers experience the most in-demand and popular video in entirely new ways," Terry Denson, Verizon's vice president of content acquisition and strategy, revealed in a press release.
Awesomeness TV is a popular YouTube channel with more than 2 million subscribers and a show on Nickelodeon. The network is supposedly a way for vlogging personalities to get extra coverage under a larger network, as well as a potential income stream from vlogging The network has a strong following among teens and "millennials," and features YouTube celebrities like Lia Marie Johnson, Lainey Linson and was founded by Brian Robbins.
Dreamworks TV has a popular collection of characters from various films, including "Shrek," "Kung Fu Panda" and "How to Train Your Dragon." This partnership would provide an opportunity for Dreamworks to create more content for its popular collection of characters as well as continue some older series.
The partnership could also help encourage younger users to use Verizon as their cell/internet provider. However, it's unclear how this multi-year partnership could affect Dreamwork's Netflix-exclusive content.
