No. 20 SMU finished the regular season with a 24-6 record after Sunday's 67-62 win against Tulsa. The victory marked the first AAC title for SMU in 22 years, with forward Markus Kennedy's 16 points and center Cannen Cunningham's 12 points and 12 rebounds playing big parts in SMU's win on Sunday. More importantly, the Mustangs appear poised to earn an invite to the 2015 NCAA Tournament after missing out last year.
"We better get in the NCAA," said SMU coach Larry Brown, via ESPN. "I didn't politick last year. But if we don't get in, there's something wrong."
In regard to the NCAA tournament, Cunningham added: "I still believe we should have got in last year. The only guarantee is to win this tournament coming up, so that's what we have on our plate right now."
East Carolina, meanwhile, ended its regular season with two straight losses. The Pirates, though, came away with their first tournament victory on Thursday with their 81-80 overtime win against UCF. Pirates guard B.J. Tyson led with 19 points and forward Marshall Guilmette added 18.
"It's exciting to be able to play another day," said East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo. "It's our first American tournament victory and I know our guys are excited to get a chance to play again tomorrow against a terrific team."
