Former ‘Survivor' Producer Bruce Beresford-Redman Sentenced to 12 Years for Wife's Death, Family Announced Plans to Appeal Decision

Former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of the 2010 murder of his wife, Monica Burgos Beresford-Redman, while they vacationed in Mexico.

NBC Los Angeles reported that Bruce was on vacation in Cancun, Mexico with his wife and their two children when he reported her missing on Apr. 6, 2010, telling police that Monica had not returned from going shopping alone. Monica's body was found two days later inside a sewer cistern near the Moon Palace resort - where the couple was staying.

An autopsy revealed that Monica had been strangled. According to NBC, hotel guests reported hearing screams at the time of her death and investigators reportedly found blood in the couple's room. Mexican authorities claimed Bruce killed his wife in their room on April 5, 2010.

In 2012, Bruce was extradited to Mexico and a judge ordered him to stay in custody until his trial. Sources close to the family told reporters that the couple's vacation to Mexico was an attempt to repair their troubled marriage after Monica learned of her husband's affair.

According to Us Weekly, Bruce's parents David and Juanita Beresford-Redman released a statement to the press expressing their disappointment in the verdict and announced their plans to appeal the count's decision.

"We are appalled and disgusted with this gross miscarriage of justice," the statement said. "Over an exhausting three-and-a-half year period this trial has done nothing but prove Bruce's innocence beyond any doubt. Whatever lies behind this ruling it is based on neither facts nor evidence. This is a disservice to Monica's memory; this is not the justice she and Bruce still deserve and that we continue to demand. At some point, even in Mexico, Bruce's innocence will lead to his freedom."

"We will immediately appeal this absurd decision and will not rest until Bruce is exonerated and returned home," the statement continued. "This decision must lead to a reconsideration of the extradition treaty between the United States and Mexico as it is clear that Mexico cannot meet even minimal standards of justice. We remain ever grateful to all those who continue to support Bruce."
