Woman Gored by Bull During Final Run in Spain, Grave Injuries Sustained

During Spain's final running of the bulls on Sunday, a bull speared a 23-year-old Australian woman, leaving her gravely injured.

Four other runners were sent to medical facilities near the San Fremin festival with serious cuts and bruises, the Associated Press reported.

The woman, who has only been identified as J.E., sustained fractures of the rib, in addition to an impaired right lung. According to the local government that puts together the annual celebration, the woman was in "very grave" condition following surgery at Navarra Hospital.

A spokesperson for the area's health authority Javier Sesma told AP that a fully-grown Miura bull pummeled the woman, who was holding on to wooden barricades near the entryway to the bullring during an early morning run in the cobblestone streets of Pamplona.

A 39-year-old Californian, 23-year-old man from Madrid and two from Navarra were injured, after being either thrown by the huge animals as they passed by, or falling while running alongside them. None of their injuries were serious, the AP reported.

Over the weekend, a handful of critical wounds afflicted some of the runners.

The day before, a teenage Spaniard who had ceased to breathe after being slammed beneath a mammoth pile of runners crumpled on the ground has reportedly regained consciousness, and can breathe without the help of machinery, according to Sesma.

That same afternoon, an American man from Cleveland was badly injured after being gored by a bull. The 35-year-old suffered a "rectal perforation" that wounded his abdomen and a kidney, Navarra Hospital stated.

On Friday, 20-year-old Patrick Eccles suffered the wrath of a bull's horn after he was gored by a particularly large one in the northeastern Spanish town. He was reported to be in stable and improving condition the next day, but had to get a spleen removed.

The San Fermin festival pays tribute to the patron saint of the city. According to Reuters, the bull run is said to date back to the 13th century, but has been celebrated almost every year from 1592 on.

Miura bulls are heavy, fast, hard-breathing bulls that can reach weights up to about 1,500 pounds.

Sunday's final run was a short one-in 2 minutes, 16 seconds the bulls and runners covered 928 yards from stables located nearby to the main bullring.
