Michigan State rallied from a 16-point deficit in the first half of Saturday's semifinal game against No. 8 Maryland and came away with a 62-58 win. Spartans guard Travis Trice led with 20 points, and swingman Branden Dawson added 17 points and eight rebounds. Although Michigan State (23-10) is unranked, coach Tom Izzo believes his team plays with a chip on its shoulders: Living up to the past Spartan greats.
"I think because we have so many great alums that really look at this month and they call from everywhere and they call our players, and our players, I think, somewhat feel a little obligated," said Izzo, who has led Michigan State to six Final Fours and one NCAA championship in 20 years, according to ESPN. "That's not a bad thing, you know, to live up to the standards of the people that built the program."
No. 6 Wisconsin, meanwhile, improved to 30-3 after blowing out Purdue on Saturday, 71-51. Badgers guard Bronson Koenig led the team with a career-high 19 points, while forwards Nigel Hayes and Sam Dekker each added 15 points.
"When we're doing good on the defensive end, it makes the offense even more fun, because one thing leads to another," said Dekker, who also had eight rebounds in the game. "We have the guys who can get it done on both ends."
