Tesla Motors has been at the center of a lot of media focus lately. Rumors are flying around about Apple possibly purchasing the company as a step towards making its Apple Car, though Apple CEO Tim Cook has denied such rumors. Tesla also had problems selling the Model S series of cars in China. Now, it appears that the company may be releasing a big software update.
"Tesla press conf at 9am on Thurs. About to end range anxiety ... via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet," CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Sunday. Such an update would drastically fix the car's driving problem. A Tesla standard Model S can only drive a maximum of 208 miles, though the Model S "D" edition can go all the way to 270.
Musk has not revealed any information about how many miles the update would add to the Model S battery. However, a look at recent updates seem to imply that Tesla could bring the Model S all the way to 400+ miles a charge. Tesla recently released a digital update that extended the Roadster series of electric car's battery life from 245 miles a charge to 400 miles a charge. This would be a significant upgrade, and would bring the Tesla car close to the average level of mileage of a sedan (500-600 miles).
Tesla has also experimented with offering vehicle owners the ability to switch physical batteries in a matter of minutes for the average cost of a gas tank.
Any user who has a Model S car will receive this update wirelessly, thus eliminating the need to visit a mechanic in order to receive a technical update.
