Remember Yo? It was this strange app that arose in 2014 to send a simple message; Yo. That's it. Many ridiculed the app for its useless function and "dumb app"-ness, while others figured out how to use the app to communicate a variety of points, such as when a football score changes or when a friend is ready to talk. Yo is now worth more than $9 million, despite having no way to bring in revenue. But now the app is looking to improve its messaging capabilities and to bring those abilities to the Apple Watch.
Yo founder Or Arbel announced at SXSW that Yo is looking to extend the functionality to a much larger database. Specifically, Arbel sees Yo as a way for non-Apple Watch users to contact and alert Apple Watch users without having to use one of Apple's Watch-centric features, such as the Force Touch system or the heartbeat transfer feature.
"Yo is building a program for anyone who is not on the watch, to be on the watch....What Yo does is the ability to give you push notifications when something you care about happens right now," Arbel explained.
This new app will display more than the typical Yo, though.
"The Yo Apple Watch notification will be able to show a short message (like a headline), a thumbnail photo and the Yo account that sent the message. If a user wants to see more, he can tap the notification, which will open Yo on the iPhone. From there, the user can tap on a link to view the content," according to Mashable.
Now, this won't cancel out the basic "yoing" function of Yo. Users will be able to send Yos back and forth regardless of whether they use an Apple Watch or not.
The Apple Watch version of Yo will be available on April 24, the same day that Apple releases the Apple Watch.
