If Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has his way, Tim Tebow will become the newest member of the Philly quarterback room and former fourth-round pick Matt Barkley will find himself vying for a roster spot on a different NFL team come training camp.
"Sources with the Eagles say they are trying to trade Matt Barkley. If he is traded, I'm told there's an "80% chance" they'll sign Tim Tebow," tweeted Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 in Washington.
Deep breaths, Eagles fans.
Deep breaths.
On Monday, Tebow, who hasn't played in a regular-season game in the NFL since 2012, worked out for the Eagles. He has most recently been working for ESPN as an SEC Network analyst.
"Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, but the team is not planning to sign him at this time," reads an ESPN report announcing the workout.
Tebow is a former first-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos who struggled to find consistency in terms of production, but always seemed gifted with the ability to pull out victory in a game's waning moments.
Tebow's most recent NFL experience came in the form of an unsuccessful training camp tryout with the New England Patriots in 2013.
"I will remain in relentless pursuit of continuing my lifelong dream of being an NFL quarterback," Tebow wrote on Twitter after he was released by New England.
In his NFL career, Tebow completed 47.9 percent of his passes for 2,422 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions and added 989 yards rushing for 12 touchdowns.
Were he, in fact, to wind up with Philly, he would be reunited with former New York Jets teammate and fellow quarterback, Mark Sanchez.
Barkley, who the team traded up to grab with the 98th selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, has appeared in four games in his NFL career, amassing 30 completions, 300 yards, four interceptions and zero touchdowns.
His value is severely limited and it is unlikely Kelly will be able to get much in the way of compensation for his rights.
