Martin Scorsese's classic gangster film "Goodfellas" will close out the Tribeca Film Festival next month to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the movie's release.
The creators and complete cast of the film will participate in a talk with Jon Stewart following the screening, the festival announced Wednesday.
Robert DeNiro not only starred in the Academy Award-nominated movie alongside Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci, but he also co-founded the film festival.
"I was most proud of this film 25 years ago, and equally proud of it now," DeNiro said. "I'm very happy that it is our closing night film."
The screening will take place on April 25 at The Beacon Theater.
"GoodFellas is one of those pictures with an honest and stylized portrayal of the gangster lifestyle that has inspired a generation of filmmakers and television directors across genres," Jane Rosenthal, another co-founder of Tribeca Film Festival, said. "We are proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary at our closing night and introduce new audiences to one of Marty's masterpieces."
Scorsese, who did not win Best Director at the Oscars for the movie and was passed over many more times by the Academy before finally being recognized for "The Departed" in 2007, said "Goodfellas" was risky.
"I was so excited to learn that this picture, now 25 years old, would be closing this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Excited and moved," he said. "It was an adventure to get it on screen-we wanted to make a movie that was true to Nick Pileggi's book and to the life of Henry Hill and his friends, which means that we broke some rules and took some risks.
"So it's heartening to know that GoodFellas has come to mean so much to so many people. It's wonderful to see one of your pictures revived and re-seen, but to see it closing Tribeca, a festival of new movies, means the world to me."
Tickets for the screening will be available to the public on March 28 via TribecaFilm.com.
