The Miami Dolphins may have already lined up another addition to their rebuilt receiving corps.
Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree is set to visit the Dolphins today, per a report from Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports.
The 27-year-old Crabtree has been dogged by questions about his attitude and mentality, so what was formerly expected to be a robust free agent market has, in fact, been quite slow in developing.
Still, Crabtree was a first-round pick, 10th overall, by the Niners in the 2009 NFL Draft for a reason. His career seemed to be on the way up as he posted steadily increasing stats the first four seasons of his career, eventually topping out at 85 receptions for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns in the 2012 season.
The soon-to-be seventh year receiver had a down year last season, finishing with just 108 receptions for 698 yards and four touchdowns.
The year prior, he managed to appear in only five games due to injury.
Crabtree has dealt with issues in relation to his play on the field as well, as he has a propensity for drops and lacks the elite speed necessary to consistently separate in coverage.
Though the fact that he played in a run-oriented offense in San Francisco with a quarterback -Colin Kaepernick - not exactly known for his precision passing skills, must also be taken into consideration.
Still, if Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin and GM Dennis Hickey - and Executive VP of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum, who, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter had Crabtree rated as his No. 1 player when he was GM of the New York Jets prior to the 2009 draft - believe that Crabtree can recapture his once-ascending form, offering him an incentive-laden contract with plenty of opportunities for the mercurial receiver to earn himself money may not be a bad move.
In fact, with the recently added speedster Kenny Stills taking the tops off defenses, Crabtree and last year's standout slot receiver Jarvis Landry could look mighty good working the middle of the field and operating as quality underneath options for still-developing franchise signal-caller, Ryan Tannehill.
