Butler's 22-10 record was good enough for a No. 6 seed, and it begins its 2015 NCAA Tournament campaign on Thursday against Texas. The Bulldogs have played unevenly in March, losing two of their last three games, including last Thursday's 67-61 loss to Xavier in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.
Although Butler has made a name for itself in March over the past couple years, Thursday's second-round game will be he first NCAA Tournament game as a head coach for Chris Holtmann, who took over after then-head coach Brandon Miller took a mysterious medical leave of absence. Miller sounded optimistic, though, and seemed to believe what he may lack in experience will be made up for by his team.
"We have had a group that has really embraced what has made Butler, I think, special and in some ways exceed expectations in the past," Holtmann told the Associated Press. "That is a real commitment to a team approach, a real commitment to defending consistently, tough-minded guys mentally and physically."
Texas, meanwhile, heads into Thursday as an 11th-seed. The Longhorns dropped to a 20-13 record after having their three-game winning streak ended in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals last Thursday against Iowa State, 69-67. Still, despite the conference tournament loss and a so-so regular season, Texas believes it can be one of the surprise teams of March Madness.
"The only thing we have to prove is to prove to ourselves that we're a great team like we said we are," said forward Myles Turner said. "Everybody has their opinions. Yeah we haven't had the most productive season. But we know what kind of team we're capable of being."
