Villanova earned a one-seed berth for it's incredible season, which included winning the Big East championship and losing only two games. The 32-2 Wildcats are the clear favorites to win on Thursday, which would make for their 16th straight win after handing Xavier a 69-52 in the conference final.
This will be Villanova's third straight NCAA Tournament, and the team is looking to have a longer season in the month of March after losing to Connecticut in last year's third round. The 2015 Wildcats, though, is an improved squad and has been receiving advice from members of Villanova's 1985 championship team.
"Them coming back and just giving us advice and telling us how proud they are of us is very humbling for us," forward Daniel Ochefu told the Associated Press. "We played for them because they set a standard. We're trying to keep that standard, set the bar a little higher.
Lafayette, meanwhile, secured a 16-seed after defeating American in the Patriot League Tournament on March 11, 65-63. Thursday will be the third NCAA Tournament for the Leopards under coach Fran O'Hanlon, who was a star basketball player for three years at Villanova and earned a spot in the Wildcats' Hall of Fame in 1972, according to the Associated Press.
"Me being a Philly guy and a Villanova guy and not being so far from Philadelphia as a team, I think there's been a lot of positives out of this," said O'Hanlon, a three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year. "Probably the only negative is that we're going to have to play them tomorrow."
