Drunk Driver Calls Cops on Himself

A man in Canada put himself under citizen's arrest for being too drunk to drive on Tuesday morning.

Donald Dummer, 55, pulled over to the side of the road while driving at 10 a.m. and called the police to tell them he was in no shape to operate a vehicle, according to The Windsor Star. He had an open bottle of alcohol in the car and was on the way to an appointment, the report said.

Even the police are puzzled by the whole situation.

"In all my years of policing, I've never heard of anybody doing this before," Const. Kevin O'Neil of the Ontario Provincial Police, said. "I've been doing this job a long time and you always think you've heard or seen everything. But needless to say, some of us were a little bit surprised by what we heard about this.

"For whatever reason, he decided to pull over to the side of the road then and there and call us."

Although Dummer, in a way, tried to be responsible about the situation, he will have to go to court in April.

"Really, the message here is look at some of the ridiculous things that people do when they are drinking and driving," O'Neil said. "We can't say what he would have done had he not called the police. We are glad that we were able to get this guy off the road."

While grateful that Drummer didn't put any others in danger for an extended period of time, O'Neil added that no matter the situation, "you're going to get caught" if you drive drunk.

"It's the same lesson we've been preaching for years and years about drinking and driving," he said. "You're going to get caught one way or another, even if it means calling the police to report it yourself."
