Fourth-seeded North Carolina (24-11) made it all the way to the ACC Tournament championship before losing to Notre Dame, 90-82. But the storyline for the Tar Heels' heading into Thursday's second-round game, according to the Associated Press, is the history between North Carolina and Harvard coach Tommy Amaker. North Carolina coach Roy Williams was an assistant with the Tar Heels when they considered recruiting Amaker. Although North Carolina ultimately chose guard Kenny Smith instead, Williams remembers Amaker well.
"(He was) the most complete point guard out there in his class," Williams told the Associated Press. "... He could score, he could defend, he was a coach on the court. He didn't make silly mistakes. He didn't try to do things that he couldn't do. And I'm not saying he was limited because he was not. He was not going to try to drive down the lane and jump over and dunk on somebody. He'd make the smarter play."
Amaker ended up playing for interstate rival Duke, and he later became an assistant on coach Mike Krzyzewski's staff. Since taking over the Harvard program in April 2007, Amaker has led the Crimson to three NCAA Tournament berths. The 2015 edition of March Madness marks Harvard's fourth straight trip under Amaker after winning the last four Ivy League conference tournaments.
