'Sleepy Hollow' Renewed for Third Season Despite Fall in Ratings

"Sleepy Hollow" is coming back for Season 3.

FOX Network has renewed the supernatural drama series for a third season with 18 episodes, Deadline Hollywood confirmed. The show's renewal crushes online rumors that "Sleepy Hollow" was in jeopardy of being cancelled after losing 40 percent of its season one viewership.

With a new season comes new creative input.

Clifton Campbell, who created and executive-produced "The Glades" and executive-produced USA's "White Collar," will take over as showrunner, stepping in for Mark Goffman, who exited the show this season due to low ratings. Goffman signed a deal with CBS Studios earlier this month.

"Sleepy Hollow is truly inventive television," David Campbell, FOX Entertainment President, said in a statement. "The talented producers... have created a fantastic world that brings 'history' to life with compelling and vibrant storytelling. I had the pleasure of working with Clifton on both The Glades and White Collar. He is an excellent producer, and we can't wait to see what this team has in store for season three."

Actors Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison are expected to reprise their roles as Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane. According to FOX, season three "will explore how the partnership between Crane and Mills will evolve and what challenges these two witnesses will now face."

At the end of season two, Ichabod was forced to kill his wife from the past, Katrina, played by actress Katia Winter, in order to defeat the mysterious evil forces.

"We want to get back to something that feels a little bit more episodic in nature, it has become overly serialized," Dana Walden, FOX TV Group chairman, said at the TCA back in January. "We are trying to return the fun to it a little bit."
