Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had himself a heck of a sophomore NFL season, racking up 862 yards and five touchdowns on 67 receptions - totals that would look good for a wide receiver, let alone a tight end - after losing nearly the entirety of his rookie year to injury.
While Kelce's numbers place him squarely among the top performers at his position last year, don't think for one moment that Kelce's already maxed out his potential.
No, according to the man himself, last season was just a taste of what he can produce at the NFL level.
"Everybody last year thought I wasn't getting the reps I was supposed to at the beginning of the year but in reality I only had about a month before training camp where I was allowed to start running," Kelce said recently while a guest on 93.3 The Fan in Cleveland, per Arrowhead Pride. "If I went out there playing more snaps than I did, I mean who knows. I might not have been able to make it. My knee still wasn't full strength last year which is why I'm excited about this year. Now I get the time to take a full offseason and get my legs ready and get my upper body and my explosiveness back that I know I really had. I didn't really feel that comfortable out there on the field but we made it work."
So Kelce put up phenomenal numbers despite a knee that wasn't quite healthy and despite not garnering the number of snaps he should have?
That's difficult to believe and it's entirely possible that Kelce's numbers last year were inflated by the absolute failure that was the Chiefs wide receiver corps, but still, it's quite impressive if true and it will be fun to see if Kelce can deliver on his promise.
Kelce also revealed, per Arrowhead Pride, that he has been watching tape of former Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons tight end and future Hall of Famer, Tony Gonzalez, from the 2004 to 2007 seasons for inspiration on how to improve his overall game.
