Kansas' season so far was good enough to earn them a No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Jayhawks head into Friday's game with a 26-8 record after Saturday's loss to Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament championship, 70-66. Despite being the second seed, there's not much talk - or many expectations - of Kansas making a deep run in the tournament.
"I wouldn't think we're anyone's favorite pick to do a lot of things," Kansas coach Bill Self told the Associated Press. "I'm not sure anybody is saying New Mexico State or Notre Dame or Wichita State or Indiana is either, because everybody is going with Kentucky. That's a big part of it."
Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, leading scorer Perry Ellis and forward Landen Lucas are still playing through injuries - Ellis with a sprained right knee that requires him to wear a brace, and Lucas with sore ribs.
New Mexico State, meanwhile, is the No. 15 seed after winning the WAC Tournament championship on Saturday against Seattle, 80-61. The Aggies roll into the Friday with a 23-10 record and 13 straight wins under their belts, but it's no secret which team is the underdog.
"Obviously we're underdogs, as we should be," said New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies, "but hopefully we can use that to our advantage in being relaxed and having some experience, and putting ourselves in a position where we play like we have nothing to lose."
